Lo, the end of Gothivale is upon us! A sad kelpy sway to mark the day! And a sad holiday to say goodbye...

On this day in 1891, Hawaii's only queen regnant took the throne. Not long after, America got twitchy and knocked her off it, partly because we wanted cheaper sugar, and partly because American businessmen were twitchy about having a woman in charge.

Nowadays white folks have conveniently forgotten that Hawaii was ever an independent kingdom, but every time we mention Hawaii in TV or movies, every time we think of it, it's tied to a tune composed by Queen Lili'uokalani.
