Wikipedia says:
Dia de los ñatitas (Day of the Skulls) is a festival celebrated in La Paz, Bolivia on November 9. In pre-Columbian times, indigenous Andeans had a tradition of sharing a day with the bones of their ancestors on the third year after burial, however only the skulls are used today. Traditionally, the skull of one or more family members are kept at home to watch over the family and protect them during the year. On November 9, the family crowns the skull with fresh flowers, sometimes also dressing it up in various garments, and makes offerings of cigarettes, coca leaves, alcohol, and various other items in thanks for the year's protection. The skulls are also sometimes taken to the central cemetery in La Paz for a special mass and blessing.
November 9th is my birthday!

Alas, all information that turns up insists that the celebration actually takes place on the November 8th. (Several of the articles cited were written on November 9th and have that date topmost, which is probably the source of the confusion.) But it's following regular Todos Santos / Día de los Muertos festivities at the beginning of the month, and it's the start of a week-long celebration. That's half of November, festooned in the macabre!

Awesome.

And what are you covered in, October? Pink and warm fuzzies? HA! Suck it!

Anyway, the Bolivialine tourist site and the BBC/PRI article cited as sources both have some interesting visuals, as does Mark's Llama Drama blog, though he says they're not his own, but from a video (to which he offers Youtube links, so win!).

And I have to point out that the quote in the PRI article makes me twitchy as all get-out. I'm fairly sure it should read, "I have brothers-in-law that got it from I-don't-know where... And I happened to arrive at their house and it was in a shoe box... And when I saw it for the first time, I gave it a kick and it scared me... And three days later I broke my foot... And I repented and ever since that day I bring it for [the festival], all these years."

"I arrived," not them. No "when I saw it roll" in there at all. I want to smack someone and hold them accountable for their shoddy punctuation, too.

But YAY for birthday creepiness!

About dream/reading tags

y-* tags categorize dreams.

For types: beyond the obvious, there are dreamlets (very short dreams), stubs (fragment/outline of a partially-lost dream), gnatter (residual impression of a lost dream).

For characters: there are roles (characters fitting an archetype), symbols (characters as symbols), and sigils (recurring figures with a significance bigger than a single dream's role/symbolism).

x-* tags categorize books.

Material is categorized primarily by structure, style and setting. If searching for a particular genre, look for the defining features of that genre, e.g. x-form:nonfic:bio, x-style:horror, x-setting:dystopian.
