Lo, the petition to free Roman Polanski!

He drugged and raped a 13-year-old child.

She did not consent. Nevermind that, as a 13-year-old child, she could not legally consent. She said no, she faked an asthma attack, she tried to stop him. She didn't have sex with him, he raped her.

And she was villified in the press when he was arrested. Oh, evil child, tempting a 43-year-man! How can we expect him to control his own gonads if you go sitting there being all sexy, saying "No, I want to go home, please stop."

And then, instead of doing his time, he fled to a country with laws that wouldn't allow him to be extradited.

So now he's tripped up, he's left his safe hole, and he's being brought back to finish what he started, and Hollywood is all aflame with indignation. How dare the Man bring up this trivial matter? This legal technicality? How dare we infringe on his liberty!? Why, even the victim wants the charges dropped.

Yes, after being victimized again by the media and the courts, the rape victim just wants it all to go away. Imagine that.

Debra Winger demands Roman Polanski's freedom! Right now! And lo, all the celebrities flock to sign the petition!

The very idea that the man I've deified since 1984, David Lynch, would sign this bothers me on levels I cannot begin to comprehend. Some of the people on the list are asshats regardless, but Marty Scorsese? Fanny Ardant? There are some bandwagons that should be torched...

But David Lynch? I feel more alone and atheistic than I had before.

I had the same reaction when I saw Pedro Almodóvar's name. Then I remembered the rape scene in Kika that squicked me right out of the rest of the movie. That's a man who has issues.
