I'm dolling up for a friend's wedding today. Or trying to, anyway.

I don't have much make-up, because I don't wear much make-up, because it's expensive and uncomfortable. Most of what I do have is in shades of bruise, because, um, it brings out my--

Because I like black, blue and purple, okay?

And I'm a terrible excuse for a girl.

I don't have much in the way of good formal clothing, because I'm poor, I don't go many places that require good and/or formal clothing, and because I'm a terrible excuse for a girl. Most of what I do have is in black and purple and velvet, because, um... Because shut up, that's why.

There will be much experimentation and compromise between the make-up and clothing before I find something that is appropriate, or as close to appropriate as I'm likely to get.

And all I can think is, "I would feel much more comfortable right now if my hair were blue or purple."

At least, you can use make-up. Money otterbe spent on tea and tasty foods, I think. Not clothes.

Sod appropriate. Go in what feels as close to comfortable for you, while compromising enough that no one is upset. Everyone's got a right to show their individuality, while remaining within the boundaries of inoffensive. E.g. - don't turn up nekked.

Yes! That's just what I did, too, and it worked out well. Er. Comfortable, I mean. Not naked. No, I'm saving that for my own wedding... :)

Alas, I got no pictures, because there was nothing to take photos of, because it was the Reception of Endless Waiting and Boredom!

Booo to boring receptions, if you're going to do the Good/Bad thing, go the whole hog! There's a gorgeous tree-cathedral (basically a copse in the shape of the building) near to where my fella lives .. if he ever [in an alternate universe] popped the question, I'd ask for the service to be held there. In a gypsy skirt and no shoes. No tops on the men. Rings made of grass. A car with D170RC3D on the numberplate, ass we blaze off into the sunset, to the best pub.

Now then, nakedness on the wedding day - there's a thought! T'would save a fortune on dress designs and days-out-with-potential-bridesmaids *yawn*

Also, the etiquette mavens scoff at the idea, but in the event that I tie the knot, I'm all for asking guests if they'd rather bring their best dish to the reception in lieu of a gift. I'm not against feeding the guests; I just feel that, as eating is so tied to bonding in people, what better way to celebrate a new bond than with food from their shared community?

That rather excellent idea has never occurred to me before; I shall suggest it to one of my dearest friends, who is tying the Big Knot July next year. The sharing of food, and food specially prepared for the occasion - an age old tradition, who could deny that as a sound way of bonding? Forget presents, if someone turned up with a plateful of kedgeree (rice, egg and smoked mackerel dish) then I'd happily bond with them for life.

Imagine the wealth of conversation this could generate, too, among some virtual strangers. Recipes, secret tips (and tipple) ...

A lot of prim and proper folks, and etiquette hounds, are shocked by the notion, and think of it as "making your guests cater your wedding," but that's just ignoring the long history of food as a social bonding tool. Also, it involves guests in the wedding in a way that simply showing up doesn't!

Also, I want rides. Pony rides, specifically, but I am also open to mechanized rides, if the budget allows. If you're going to sit around waiting for the new couple to get around to your table to chat, you might as well get to sit on a merry-go-round!

Hah! I love the idea of sitting a load of whining kids on a rollercoaster while waiting for the bride to get her act together ...

And bags I the tea-cup ride. In fact, the whole layout should be based on one, so that you can circulate the room evenly. If not perhaps smoothly.

My friend, who I mentioned before, has it in mind to begin her "first dance" with a slow smoochie ... then it'll cut halfway into some jazzed-up version, with she and her fella break-dancing and throwing shapes on the dancefloor, probably "Grease" style. This is what I adore about my friend - she doesn't try to be unconventional, she just is.
