Still a liberal. Still not on board with rape.
Saturday, 3 October 2009 04:23 pmSome of you may be happy to hear that you now have my official permission (as representative of the Grand Duchy of Mokievania) to beat Natalie Portman and Salman Rushdie with the nearest available blunt object. And those of you displeased with "Indiana Jones and the Ridiculously Longwinded Title"? Go ahead--give Harrison Ford a smack!
Ah, what the hell! Go ahead and have a look at the people who are signing the petition to free Polanski because he's not only a great rapist (of drugged underage girls, at least), he's also a great artiste.
Hey, Charles Manson wrote songs. I hear they're good. How about we let him out of jail? Yeah, somebody was killed and that was bad*, but it was decades ago and, man, given the state that California's economy is in, should they really be wasting money on the guy? Let's let him out, comb his hair, put him in a suit, and sit him and Polanski down at a nice restaurant so we can laugh at how silly it is, dredging things up after all this time.
I mean, Polanski's gotta be over that whole 'murdered my wife' thing by now, right? It was almost forty years ago! Surely he's forgiven the man, and that's all that matters, right?
NO. NO, YOU FUCKING MORONS, THAT IS NOT ALL THAT MATTERS.
What good does it do to bring Polanski back to face up to the consequences of his actions? It confirms that there are consequences, and that no one--no matter how important they think they are, no matter how much money they have or how many great movies they make--is above the law.
We are a civilized nation. We are so civilized, we can even spell it 'civilised', if that's what you'd like. As a civilized nation, we have standards for behavior, and one of those standards is not letting people drug, rape, and sodomize children.
(Don't worry if the situation's looking a little bleak. We can still love on Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Kevin Smith and Salma Hayek...)
